Here's the proposal I submitted for this exhibition curated by Linda Weintraub. Photos above of a maquette-like miniature model. Am beginning now to braid sections of jute into 3 foot segments. The Dorsky ceiling is 15.8 feet high. The braids remind me my own hair, and of the Rapunzel fairy tale. Art making is always such a magical, mystical process. Ideas continue to develop, zig and zag as we work. It will be amazing to see how this project is ultimately executed.
Title: Lifeline
Medium: Installation/Assemblage
Dimensions: Floor to ceiling (15.8”) with a circumference of 2 – 6”, and a 18” diameter spiral on floor
Lifeline is a metaphorical beanstalk linking earth/sky, material/spiritual, human/nature. Natural objects and materials from forest floor, curbside, road side (bones, feathers, pods, roots, branches, seeds) hang from jute with wire, thread and string. The structure hangs from the Gallery’s metal strut ceiling to the floor (originating on the earth, rising to the heavens) offering a symbol of hope, heightened awareness, transformation. It is a garland-‐like construction of sections that may be transported to, and/or created on site. Opportunity for visitors to contribute to the piece may be explored and/or a hands on workshop developed.
