The Confrontation Act by ZDoggMD

Another brilliant piece of work by ZDoggMD. Exceedingly hilarious, but truly tells about the conflicts usually happen between ED docs and ward on-call docs. Must see!

Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis

.
Wrote a short review on Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis (PLE) - I'm glad that it's published in the latest issue of Clinical Medicine Journal. I came across a case of PLE 2 years ago when I was in Taiping - a case of a young lady with neuropsychiatric symptoms which remained diagnostically challenging - until we found out that she had ovarian teratoma - which was so small that not even

The Hardest Thing

I've just returned from my 2nd grad school residency at Goddard. There was at least one very long torturous moment I wanted to leave. And countless more in which I couldn't believe how lucky I am to be on this wild adventure.
It is a petri dish to be sure. Literally, with the cold that was going around. And metaphorically because of the amazing amount of creative exploration and investigation that is being inspired, and generated here.
I find the experience to be so overwhelming it is difficult to write about. So much goes on in the course of just one week. The schedule is demanding of both students and faculty. The din in the dining room is deafening. The depth, breadth and dearth of information is extraordinary.
I'm of simple mind. I short circuit in an instant.
And yet. I am being blown open, heart and mind.
My aunt who went back to school in her 50's to get her MFA was one of my greatest inspirations for doing this. And I remember her telling me that one of the most important things about pursuing an MFA was the community with which you would connect and the individuals with whom you would bond.
I didn't find that to be particularly true in my 1st semester. But relationships can take time. And in a low residency program, perhaps a little longer. So while last semester sparked a more interior relationship, I already sense that relationships and connections being made this semester will change me deeply.
Enough said for now. I hope to share more of this adventure in the coming weeks and months. So stay tuned, but don't hold your breath. I work in fits and starts, am easily distracted, with too much to do and too little time.

May the Magic Medicine of heart openings and mind blowings rock your world every now and then.

NKF Kidney Discovery Center

Attended the NKF scientific meeting the other day, and visited the Kidney Discovery Center (KDC) in the NKF center as well. It is actually quite an educational center which aims to provide an interactive experience to the visitors. Models with various information such as kidney functions, causes of renal failure etc can be found.

Experience this learning journey one day! ;)

Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine!

Here's a link to an essay just published in the Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine.  It's a journal where the human in medicine takes center stage and not the pathology.  My essay "Metaphor in Chinese Medicine: a Patient Narrative" is an account of an interesting case I witnessed while a student observer in our student acu. clinic.  It's about how we practitioners of Chinese Medicine have our metaphors for understanding patterns of disease or imbalances--we train years to master these skills and Daoist theories. But we need to pay attention to the fact that the patients have their own metaphors concerning their illness, and we need to listen to that story too.  Enjoy.  Thanks!
